Teaching the place values unit.
Grade 3.
Want the students to have fun - be engaged.
A fellow teacher tells me of a great game to play using dice.
Off to the Dollar store.
Buy 3 packs of 5 dice - Bright red.
I demonstrate the game.
I roll a five.
and another.
and another.
and another.
"Wow 4 fives in a row!" I say.
Someone speaks out:
"Mr Sargent, those are trick dice"
Skeptical, I view the package.
Staring me in the face are the words:
"Guaranteed to roll a seven every time!"
My face as red as the dice, I look to the teacher for assistance.
She borrows some dice from next door.
Game was a success - they loved it.
Sometimes crazy things are thrown at you.
Be Prepared.
The lesson?
Don't buy dice without reading the package.

Alex,
I died laughing when I read that post- I think your experience definitely puts things into perspective for the rest of us- things WILL go wrong- not everything will go perfectly all the time. What's important is that we learn from it, and we learn to LAUGH about it. I bet your kids thought the whole situation was HILARIOUS, and they respected you even more for it because you made them laugh and you made it WORK- overall, your lesson was a success!
We are all human and make mistakes-kids realizing this will make them respect us even more because we will seem more human and GENUINE to them :)
I love Seinfeld moments :)
AMAZING!!!
I laughed out loud when I read your story. You should congratulate your students for paying attention so well! It's fine if you mess up...shows that you're human!!
that is the best story i have heard thus far.
you are genious. love it!
haha, oh Alex.
That story rocks! I never considered reading the packaging myself. I guess i should be more careful.
That is definitely a story that you will never forget from your first teaching block!!! Something that you can look back on and laugh about later. I am sure that we will all have a story like this by the time we are done teacher's college. Thanks for the tip!
